"International Investigation Leads to Shutdown of Ransomware Group" - FBI

Today (August 13, 2024) the FBI announced a significant dismantling of the infrastructure behind the Radar/Dispossessor ransomware group. The FBI-led effort spanned the US, UK and Germany and involved law enforcement agencies in all three countries, as stated in the FBI news announcement.

The Radar/Dispossessor ransomware has been responsible for attacks, and attempted attacks, on multiple public services across more than a dozen countries.

Ransomware Growth

Ransomware has continued its global exponential growth over recent years, the reasons for which are many and varied. Two key factors in its growth are the ever-present threat to the market value of affected companies and the continued rise of Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS).

The costs associated with ransomware have grown in recent years, from an approximate figure of $200m in 2019 to, what some analysts report, as more than $1bn in 2023. Notably, 2022 is reported to have shown a decline in ransomware costs. This drop coincides with the previous FBI-led take-down of the Hive ransomware network, although the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict is likely to also have been a factor.
